| Taking Care of Business
Maryanne’s class starts, runs, and liquidates a business.
This process highlights a wide variety of financial skills.
To start, students fill out job applications, including a resume,
and sit for a job interview. They do a marketing survey, decide
on a product/service and find suppliers.
The company has four departments: Marketing, Human Resources, Finance
and Production. While each student as an individual responsibility,
all students learn how to manage the money.
The Daily Grind
The students have two food carts, and deliver food to classes. Each
cart has a cash box and has to fill out a cart inventory sheet.
The money in the box at the end must match the amount of food sold.
If not, their pay is docked (each student receives .40 a day)
Students take ownership of the company. They become very responsible
and take pride in making sure the cart inventory and cash box work
out at the end of class.
Business is Booming
The enthusiasm of these classes shows in the enrollment. They've
gone from one section per year to five.
Maryanne is now managing her 11th student company. That’s
eleven full classes of students who can not only manage their money,
but also have a better appreciation of where it comes from.
